Kronan

On May 20th 1814, the mill owner Anders Åberg married Ebba Sofia Nauclér from Brunskog and the couple settled in the city's first neighborhood. This house was most likely built for the newlywed couple.

Kronan i Åmål

Address: Södra Ågatan 2
Block: Kronan större 5

Anders Åberg died in 1838, and the house went to his son Gustaf Åberg who lived there with his family. When Gustaf Åberg died in 1890, the property was sold to the merchant Anton Johan Gustaf Weinberg.

The elementary school for girls moved in 1897. The girls' school started its activities in 1880 in the so-called Sigerudsgården, which was located at the old fire station. In 1883 the school moved to Lilliestiernska, and in 1897 it was installed in the house in the Kronan quarter. The school was closed in 1908 and merged with the educational institution, which became a comprehensive school. Kronan was sold to the city parish for SEK 11,000, but later passed into the ownership of the public school. Temporary school rooms were set up there between 1911 and 1921 for the crowded elementary school students. The school was then called the Lower School. In 1922 the building was bought by the Rålin organ factory, which needed housing for its employees.

For a long time, the Kronan was a day care centre.

Nowadays it has been renovated and the interior converted into apartments.

The exterior of the building is well-preserved and typical of the period and fits in well with the rest of the 18th and 19th century buildings.

It was declared a historical monument in 1978.
