About the Old Town

In Åmål, we call the Old Town district east of the river and north of Kungsberget.

Åmål Gamla staden

The area escaped the great fire of 1901 and has retained its genuine character of an old urban environment.
At the far end of Lake Vänern is the Hembygdsmuséet and adjacent to the area is also the guest harbor with the Marina.

The Old Church, from the 17th century, is located in the eastern part of the area, on the site where Åmål's first church a once lay.
The building is now owned by the municipality.

Immediately east of the river is the central park - Plantaget. This is the area of the old town marketplace.
The market and square sales were later moved to the current square to the west the river and the plantation were prepared for a lush park.

The plantation and the buildings around the park are one of the country's best preserved 18th century environments.

The name Åmål was mentioned in literature as early as 1312.

Different spellings:
Ömordh (1312), Amoll (1442), Åmolle (1552), Åhmål (1680) and Åmål (1825). Åmål received its letter of privilege in 1643.
