Stadshotellet

Stadshotellet (The City Hotel).

Stadshotellet i Åmål

Address: Kungsgatan 9
Block: Liljan Mindre 19

The building, which is now the Åmål City Hotel, has burned down three times in the past. The first fire was caused by Norwegian troops who pillaged and burned Åmål only two years after its foundation in 1645.

The second fire happened during an April night of 1809, when the commerce advisor Bengt Norström's house burned to the ground. Norström had the house rebuilt in 1848. The house was later bought by the restaurant keeper Anders Peter Björlin. He then refurbished the property and made it the City Hotel (inn), with the main entrance facing Södra Ågatan and Plantaget (the city park).

The third time was on Wednesday, January 15, 1902 when a big fire reduced both the hotel and the so-called Hammargården on plot No. 38, to ashes. The large fire destroyed several parts of the city in 1902 when the hotel burned. The first sod for the new city hotel was taken on November 4th, 1902. As Åmål had no electric light at the time, the hotel committee decided to put acetylene gas lighting in all the rooms. One and a half months after installation, in November 29, 1904, one of the the acetylene devices exploded. The grand opening of the new city hotel got postponed. The hotel was finally able to open in April of 1905.

It was declared a historical monument in 1978.
