In 1788, King Gustaf III visited Åmål with his entourage, after the Danish-Norwegian attack on Sweden's western border had been halted. During his visit, the King was a guest at “Dahlgrensgården”.
For four weeks, the city was occupied by 700 dragoons, a large infantry unit and 100 horses. The King's dormitory was on the upper floor of the newly built house by the city square.

Gustav Åberg died in 1826 and his family sold the estate to the former service manager at Forsbacka ironworks, Jan Magnus Dahlgren, who gave his name to the house.
Jan Magnus Dahlgren initiated the foundation of Åmåls Bank in 1836 and the banks first premises were in “Dahlgrensgården”. When Åmåls Bank celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1936 a memorial was held at his grave in the northern cemetery.

The professor and philosopher Vitalis Norström was born in this house on January 29, 1856. As a general cultural factor, Norström's philosophy initiated a new era in Swedish intellectual life. In recognition of his efforts, he was elected to the Swedish Academy in 1907.

For the people of Åmål, the building is also known by the name “Reimarska Huset” after the doctor Albin Reimar who had his reception here for many years.

It was declared a historical monument in 1978.
