Hantverksföreningens hus i Åmål

Address: Södra Ågatan 11
Block: Liljan Mindre 3

The mill owner Johan (Janne) Åberg built this property in the 1840s. He was, at the time, the wealthiest citizen in Åmål. Åberg owned half of the ironwork in Gustavsfors and he had stakes in some of the ironworks in Värmland. He was also the owner of the Sjövik and Kasenberg farms outside the city. Åberg was known as a major donor, contributing large amounts of money to the poor during his lifetime.

But Åberg's wealth ended. Incorrect speculation, large guarantee commitments and the unfortunate economic climate made him destitute and he went bankrupt in 1864. Janne Åberg died in 1877 and he is buried in the North Cemetery of Åmål.

The property was purchased by “Åmåls Sparbank” (The bank of Åmål), who moved their business here. During one period of time, Åmåls Sparbank shared its premises with Nya Wermlandsbanken (the new bank of Wermland). For many years the house was owned by the Åmål Industry organization and the Craft association.

Today the house is owned by Åmål's municipality. In the old Spirits magazine, the red row of outhouses is now a Craft shop and showroom.
Today the building houses a restaurant.

It was declared a historical monument in 1978.
