Engersgården

Ekmansgården / Söderbergsgården / Engersgården (Engers Estate).

Engersgården i Åmål

Address: Södra Ågatan 3
Block: Flaggan 2

You will find Engersgården near Åmål's Old Church. The estate has previously been called both Ekmansgården and Söderbergsgården. The house was built by Mayor Anders Ekman in 1777 after his previous home was destroyed in the great fire during which a third of all buildings in the city burned down.

The estate had a royal visit in November 21, 1772. King Gustav III, who on his “Eriksgata” (a king or queens tour through their country) through the western provinces visited Åmål and its Mayor. The visit made Ekman - a former royal opponent - a royalist.

Anders Ekman became the city's mayor in 1759, when he was only 24 years old. He later became the city's representative at four Parliaments and commerce advisor. He was also the grandfather of the famous writer and poet Anders Fryxell. Anders Ekman died in 1791.

Ekmansgården eventually changed its name to Söderbergsgården. In 1901 the estate was bought by a newly married couple - the Field Doctor Arthur Söderberg and his wife Anita.

Nowadays the estate is owned by a merchant called Per Enger. His father, the Managing Director Yngve Enger, refurbished the house in the 1940s. The property is now called Engersgården (Engers Estate) after the current owner.

It was declared a historical monument in 1978.
