Mellanbron

Mellanbron (the bridge in the middle) is one of the oldest bridges in Åmål, also known as Valvbron (the Arches Bridge).

Mellanbron

Even before the city was founded, there was a wooden bridge in the same place that the current one now stands. In 1696 the Land Surveyor Bo Kempensköld described the bridges in Åmål as "old but preserved."

Mellanbron was originally a wooden bridge, built with rough timber beams, a layer of birch bark and a filling of earth and gravel on top. The old wooden bridge was the subject of many repairs during the 19th century, and in 1839 it was decided that they would build an arched bridge of stone instead.

In 1841 they signed an agreement for the construction of a new bridge with building contractor Anders Kallin from Tösse. But there was a dispute when it became known that the bridge abutments' structural integrity was not satisfactory, and the construction was not approved. After a long legal process, they finally found an agreement and the bridge abutments were eventually decreed. The beautiful bridge was completed in 1846.
